Take Pride In America's Health: Volunteering as a Gateway to Physical Activity

Take Pride in America's Health: Volunteering as a Gateway to Physical Activity

John Librett, Michelle M. Yore, David M. Buchner and Thomas L. Schmid

A recent study found that volunteer programs may play a role in increasing levels of physical avtivity. In some cases volunteer programs may simultaneously improve individual health, benefit the environment and increase the public's opportunities for physical activity. Those who volunteer on environmental issues are 2.6 times more likely to meet physical activity recommendations as those who do not volunteer for these issues. Environmental projects such as maintaining trails, planting trees and cleaning parks, may be important for individual fitness because of their potential for high levels of physical activity.

Take Pride's Mobile Volunteer Depots to Assist Hurricane-Recovery Efforts

 News

Take Pride in America’s Mobile Volunteer Depots to Assist Hurricane-Recovery Efforts on Florida’s Public Lands

Washington, D.C. – The Take Pride in America program will create a fleet of Mobile Volunteer Depots (MVD) to help Florida’s public lands recover from the impact of four major hurricanes in 2004. The new MVD project builds on Florida’s strong tradition of volunteerism at state parks and on other public lands. Each MVD will be loaded with shovels and rakes, trashbags and gloves, wheelbarrows, an Onan generator, and other equipment. A total of five MVDs will be stationed across Florida at key state parks, but will be available to support volunteer efforts – like cleaning up beaches, removing downed trees, rebuilding trails, and more – at local, state and federal sites.

Help Lend a Hand on Florida's Public Lands!

HELP LEND A HAND ON FLORIDA'S PUBLIC LANDS!

Take Pride in America, the Take Pride Partners Council, and Florida State Parks have joined together to assist in the recovery of hurricane-damaged federal, state and local public lands in Florida. This month, Governor Jeb Bush will launch Take Pride in Florida to encourage volunteer-led conservation projects, preserve America’s public lands and foster a culture of service in others.

On National Make a Difference Day, October 23, hundreds of volunteers will join national, state and local leaders for the nation’s largest day of volunteering to clean up and restore public lands, waters and beaches damaged by the four major hurricanes that recently swept across the state.

In late 2003, we organized a similar campaign in Southern California to aid some 730,000 acres damaged by fires. Through this effort, volunteers pledged more than 400,000 hours of their time. Special heroes in this effort included the Good Sam Club, Girl Scouts of America, Bass Pro Shops, California OHV organizations and Disney. We need similar support to help Florida's public lands recover from four devastating hurricanes.

Go to www.takepride.info and click on Take Pride in Florida to pledge online or click here
and complete a pledge card for either yourself or your organization and fax it to Take Pride in Florida for inclusion in the October 23 announcement of annual pledge hours. If you have any questions please contact Florida Take Pride in America Deputy Coordinator Phillip Werndli at (850) 245-3098 or phillip.werndli@dep.state.fl.us.

Derrick Crandall, President of the American Recreation Coalition, was presented the first Spirit of Take Pride Award during the Take Pride in America 2004 National Awards Ceremony in Washington, DC. The award honors Mr. Crandall for his extraordinary efforts in promoting the Take Pride program and its message of public-land stewardship and volunteerism across the country. Those efforts have included recruiting new partners, raising funds and finding opportunities to spread the word about Take Pride. He has been the inspiration behind several Take Pride events over the past year, including the very successful Southern California volunteer pledge drive. The Spirit of Take Pride award is a special award presented by the program’s executive director only in those years when an individual’s efforts on behalf of Take Pride in America merit special recognition.
Take Pride in America Western Tour Reaches Oregon

Take Pride in America Western Tour Reaches Oregon

Interior Secretary Gale Norton traveled across much of Oregon on August 19 as part of the 2004 Take Pride in America Western Tour, encouraging Americans to enjoy their public land legacy and inviting their involvement as volunteers to protect these special places. The Secretary addressed employees of Monaco Coach and noted the record-setting pace of RV sales – and the fact that the RVs produced in the plant would soon be helping American families enjoy the nation’s parks, forests and wildlife refuges. She then journeyed across the McKenzie-Santium National Scenic Byway, one of nearly one hundred special routes showcasing the nation’s scenic, recreational, historic and cultural best. In Redmond, the Secretary met with U.S. Representative Greg Walden – who represents this recreation-rich region and chairs the House Subcommittee on Forests and Forest Health. After a joint news conference with Mr. Walden, Secretary Norton addressed some 6,000 members of the Family Motor Coach Association, telling the group of the Bush Administration’s accomplishments in our parks and other public lands and outlining opportunities for rewarding volunteer service at federal, state and local recreation sites. As the day ended, the Secretary met with Oregon travel, tourism and recreation industry leaders to express the Administration’s commitment to cooperation with the private sector and to discuss such recent innovations as the enhanced National Recreation Reservation System and www.recreation.gov – a site which helps Americans discover the extraordinarily diverse opportunities in America’s Great Outdoors.

The 2004 Take Pride in America Western Tour is made possible by the support of Unilever and Monaco Coach. The tour will involve events across the western US. Joining Secretary Norton in the Oregon activities were Marti Allbright, Executive Director of the Take Pride in America Program, Derrick Crandall, Coordinator of the Take Pride Partners Council, and representatives of numerous key Take Pride Charter Partners.
