Take Pride in America has made amazing progress since Interior Secretary Norton announced the program’s relaunch in April 2003. Every state has officially joined the program. Take Pride cities are being designated. More than 100 Charter Partners have lent their support. Scores of volunteer events have been held, with more scheduled every day. The Take Pride Volunteer Guide is being distributed across the country. Clint Eastwood has agreed to reprise his role as a Take Pride national spokesman. The names of millions of Americans interested in volunteering on public lands are being organized into a database to help land managers access this army of friends. And the recipients of the second round of national awards are about to be announced.

Fight Fat with Fun

Washington D.C. -- (July 29, 2004) White House Fellow Dr. Michael Suk and PricewaterhouseCoopers Executive Curt Cornelssen spoke to a room filled with Congressional staffers about the opportunities to Fight Fat with Fun™ - using recreation as a means to attack the surge in obesity. The statistics are daunting: 400,000 premature deaths annually; $100 billion in additional annual medical costs, much of which is paid by government programs; youths who prefer to be online rather than outdoors. Dr. Suk spoke of the great opportunities to reach millions through recreation on federally managed lands and waters, unveiling the new Get Fit With US! efforts of the federal agencies. Mr. Cornelssen shared case studies demonstrating that employers ranging from Caesar's to Union Pacific have found economic gain from attacking low levels of physical activity by their workforces. And Derrick Crandall of ARC outlined a range of actions that Congress might consider to encourage companies to take a more active role in boosting recreation participation - from loaner bikes to gifts of park passes to physically active weekend outings for employees' families.

 FIGHTING FAT WITH FUN

The rise in obesity has been widely reported, and the costs of this public-health threat now rival the healthcare costs linked to tobacco use in dollars and suffering. Various public policy initiatives have been mounted to address this challenge, from a recently-announced reclassification of obesity as a disease to awareness campaigns from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, from an executive order directing federal land management agencies to assist Americans to increase their physical activity levels to new funding for school PE programs designed to increase participation in life-long physical activity. Get information on how a growing number of public and private organizations are turning to recreation as a key antidote to obesity.

 Featuring:

A healthy and tasty lunch demonstrating menu changes at America’s fast food restaurants

A pedometer for your use to track your own physical activity

A lively discussion about how Congress could encourage and facilitate public/private actions to address and reduce obesity in America
