Washington, D.C. – The American Recreation Coalition (ARC) testified before the U.S. House of Representatives Committee on Natural Resources on reauthorization of legislation allowing federal agencies to collect and retain entrance and recreation fees. ARC told the Congress that recreationists supported fees but were concerned about the lack of focus on improvements in recreation experiences following the enactment of the 2004 Federal Lands Recreation Enhancement Act.

Great Outdoors Month 2014 Proclamations & PSAs

June is a special time to celebrate America’s Great Outdoors. National leaders for years have issued proclamations recognizing this month as Great Outdoors Month, a time when America celebrates its natural treasures. This recognition highlights the benefits of active fun outdoors in our magnificent shared resources of forests, parks, refuges, and other public lands and waters. Proclamations generate widespread media attention, encouraging millions of American families to move outside, and prompting public discussion of important issues linked to outdoor recreation, including volunteerism, health, and outdoor ethics.

PLANNING UNDER WAY FOR GREAT OUTDOORS MONTH 2014

This news release is available as a .pdf here.

Washington, D.C. – Recreation community leaders have begun intense planning for Great Outdoors Month 2014 beginning with Memorial Day weekend on May 24-26 and ending with Independence Day on July 4, 2014.

Pillars of Great Outdoors Month include events ranging from National Trails Day® to National Fishing and Boating Week, from National GO (Get Outdoors) Day to Welcome to the Water on National Marina Day and the Great American Backyard Campout. Great Outdoors Month is officially proclaimed through proclamations issued by the President of the United States and all 50 state governors. The proclamations highlight the value of recreation to conservation causes while fostering appreciation of our American values and raising awareness of the economic importance of the $650+ billion in annual spending in countless communities across the United States, the role of recreation in boosting physical and mental health, and the value of the Great Outdoors to U.S. efforts to attract international tourists.

    Fall 2013 Issues Briefing

The American Recreation Coalition’s Fall Recreation Issues Briefing focused on four key topics: funding recreation in America’s Great Outdoors; connecting people with their Great Outdoors; MAP-21 and key recreation transportation issues; and Great Outdoors Month 2014. More than 50 representatives of recreation, conservation and tourism organizations gathered at AAA in Washington, D.C. to hear from topic experts and to offer their own observations on the issues at hand.

To complement the presentations and discussions, ARC prepared and distributed a series of white papers providing useful background on each issue.
