Get Outdoors USA! Award Given to Leading Forest Friends Group

The first Get Outdoors USA! Award was given to the San Bernardino National Forest Association (SBNFA) at its meeting in late November 2007 by Derrick Crandall, President of the American Recreation Coalition (ARC) and coordinator of the new national effort to boost participation in healthy outdoor fun. The award will enable the association to purchase a fleet of canoes and related equipment for environmental-education and water-safety programs at the Big Bear Discovery Center, a unique partnership program of the USDA Forest Service and SBNFA.

The award includes $4,000 in cash and other support. According to Crandall, half of the contribution is a special matching grant from the Johnny Morris Foundation of Springfield, Missouri. Mr. Morris is the founder and chairman of Bass Pro Shops, one of the nation’s leading outdoor recreation retailers, and is a prominent conservationist and outdoors advocate.

The award was presented to Association Vice President Michael Davis and Executive Director Sarah Miggins. In his remarks during the presentation, Crandall praised the association for its national leadership and added his personal thanks for the support the association provided during Partners Outdoors 2007, held at the Lake Arrowhead Resort. He also invited the association to be a charter partner in the inaugural Get Outdoors Day on June 14, 2008, when public and private partners will host Americans at more than 100 sites on national forests and other lands for a day of fun and learning.
