Take Pride in America Western Tour Reaches Oregon

Interior Secretary Gale Norton traveled across much of Oregon on August 19 as part of the 2004 Take Pride in America Western Tour, encouraging Americans to enjoy their public land legacy and inviting their involvement as volunteers to protect these special places. The Secretary addressed employees of Monaco Coach and noted the record-setting pace of RV sales – and the fact that the RVs produced in the plant would soon be helping American families enjoy the nation’s parks, forests and wildlife refuges. She then journeyed across the McKenzie-Santium National Scenic Byway, one of nearly one hundred special routes showcasing the nation’s scenic, recreational, historic and cultural best. In Redmond, the Secretary met with U.S. Representative Greg Walden – who represents this recreation-rich region and chairs the House Subcommittee on Forests and Forest Health. After a joint news conference with Mr. Walden, Secretary Norton addressed some 6,000 members of the Family Motor Coach Association, telling the group of the Bush Administration’s accomplishments in our parks and other public lands and outlining opportunities for rewarding volunteer service at federal, state and local recreation sites. As the day ended, the Secretary met with Oregon travel, tourism and recreation industry leaders to express the Administration’s commitment to cooperation with the private sector and to discuss such recent innovations as the enhanced National Recreation Reservation System and www.recreation.gov – a site which helps Americans discover the extraordinarily diverse opportunities in America’s Great Outdoors.

The 2004 Take Pride in America Western Tour is made possible by the support of Unilever and Monaco Coach. The tour will involve events across the western US. Joining Secretary Norton in the Oregon activities were Marti Allbright, Executive Director of the Take Pride in America Program, Derrick Crandall, Coordinator of the Take Pride Partners Council, and representatives of numerous key Take Pride Charter Partners.
