ORIR and USDA Officials Discuss Improving Visitor Experiences on National Forests

Leaders from several Outdoor Recreation Industry Roundtable (ORIR) organizations met with Acting Under Secretary of Agriculture for Natural Resources and the Environment Dan Jiron and a key group of USDA officials, including many from the U.S. Forest Service (FS), on November 21. The ORIR group highlighted the importance of national forests to many world-class recreation experiences including boating, fishing, skiing, riding and much more. They emphasized that partnerships in recreation experiences are key to expanding access to – and enjoyment of – America’s public lands and waters.

Interior and Agriculture Departments Sign Unprecedented MOU with Fishing and Boating Industry

The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (USFWS), Bureau of Land Management (BLM), and the U.S. Forest Service (USFS) announced a new memorandum of understanding (MOU) with the Association of Fish & Wildlife Agencies (AFWA), American Sportfishing Association (ASA), National Marine Manufacturers Association (NMMA) and Recreational Boating & Fishing Foundation (RBFF) October 30.  The unprecedented MOU – signed just after Secretary of the Interior Ryan Zinke declared October as National Hunting and Fishing Month – will expand cooperation for planning and implementing projects and activities to promote recreational fishing and boating conducted on public lands and waters.

U.S. Senate Acts Unanimously on Great Outdoors Month®!

The U.S. Senate has unanimously designated June 2017 “Great Outdoors Month!” Action on Senate Resolution 199 was delayed beyond June by contentious debate over issues like healthcare, but active outdoor fun on America’s public lands and waters continues to enjoy bipartisan support. The resolution was introduced by Senator Steve Daines (R-MT), and was cosponsored by Senators Gary Peters (D-MI), Cory Gardner (R-CO), Jeanne Shaheen (D-NH), Jim Risch (R-ID), Martin Heinrich (D-NM) and Mazie Hirono (D-HI). Organizations across the country are preparing to celebrate June as Great Outdoors Month 2017! 2016 was the most successful Great Outdoors Month in history. Two signature events (Partners Outdoors 2016 and the GO West Campout), 17 Capital and Governor’s Campouts, thousands of partner events across the country and more helped introduce millions of Americans to healthy, active fun outdoors on their public lands and waters. Proclamations from the President and all 50 Governors recognized the economic and healthful importance of outdoor recreation to their states and the entire country.

The Outdoor Recreation Industry Roundtable (ORIR) February 13 urged Senate leaders Mitch McConnell (R-KY) and Chuck Schumer (D-NY) to promptly bring Interior Secretary-designate Ryan Zinke’s nomination to the Senate floor and support his confirmation, saying “The Department needs active policy leadership as soon as possible.”

The National Park Service, Bureau of Land Management, U.S. Forest Service, U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service and U.S. Army Corps of Engineers will all waive their entrance fees on select dates in 2017, offering all Americans the opportunity to enjoy healthy, active outdoor fun on their public lands and waters. Most fee-free days, starting with Martin Luther King Day on January 16th, are linked to special holidays and events. Plus there are often special offers from agency partners to make your visits even more enjoyable.

National Parks Adventure is a Huge Success!

National Parks Adventure is a huge success! Brand USA’s giant-screen movie – which showcases the incredible beauty of our national parks – has been seen more than 2.4 million times in 98 markets worldwide in just the first six months. The film – narrated by Robert Redford – is the highest-grossing documentary of 2016 so far, beating out competition from other giant-screen films and Hollywood – with an estimated $16.8 million in worldwide ticket sales through August! The film’s PR campaign has generated more than 6.4 billion impressions, with an additional billion impressions generated by other exhibitors and partners. And the film is succeeding in generating greater interest in visiting the United States, with more than 80% of international viewers saying they’re much more, or somewhat more likely to visit the U.S. after seeing the film!
