Great Outdoors Month® 2017: A Great Success!

Longer days and warmer weather have Americans outdoors and having fun this summer…and a very successful Great Outdoors Month® 2017 deserves lots of credit!  Great Outdoors Month® has always encouraged all of us – outdoor rookies and experts alike – to connect with and enjoy America’s great outdoors, and 2017 was our best year yet!

  • For the 14th straight year, the President proclaimed Great Outdoors Month®.  President Trump joins President Barack Obama, President George W. Bush and President Bill Clinton – who recognized Great Outdoors Week beginning in 1997 – in shining a national spotlight on the healthful and economic benefits of outdoor recreation to America.
  • For the first time, the U.S. Senate unanimously approved a resolution designating June 2017 as Great Outdoors Month®.  The resolution received bipartisan support, and was led by Senator Steve Daines (R-MT) in cooperation with Senator Gary Peters (D-MI) and five other bipartisan cosponsors.
  • More than a million people celebrated Great Outdoors Month® by participating in thousands of events in all 50 states.
  • Governor’s Campouts took place for the 4th straight year, including events in Delaware, Indiana, Oregon and Wyoming involving Governors and major public/private partnerships And much more!
  • Organizations across the outdoor recreation community joined in Great Outdoors Month® by hosting events including:

  • Kids to Parks™ Day
  • National Trails Day®
  • National Fishing and Boating Week
  • National Get Outdoors Day
  • National Marina Days
  • National Great Outdoors Day of Service
